Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders
Kathy Paxton, Director
Behavioral Health & Education Initiatives
Since 2004, families, state and local agencies, and universities have united to fight the tragic effects of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). The Center for Learning Excellence has facilitated the work of Ohio’s FASD State Steering Committee in developing and implementing a statewide strategic plan for prevention and treatment of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. The Center has assisted the statewide steering committee in establishing efficiency in state systems resource allocation and coordinating services. The Center has also helped the committee augment available resources to address FASD by (1) developing and measuring the impact of a statewide social marketing campaign, (2) working with physicians statewide to ensure that parenting and pregnant women are warned about the sometimes tragic effects of drinking while pregnant, and (3) equipping state agencies with consistent training opportunities and educational materials to ensure a systems approach to FASD-specific services tailored to their respective constituencies. The Center also provides content and multi-media support for Ohio’s official FASD resource website, www.notasingledrop.org.
